Abstract
Examples provide a network-utilization based scheduler that considers network utilization when load balancing virtual computing instances (VCIs) in a cluster. The scheduler also periodically evaluates proposed migrations based on a current cluster snapshot including network utilization data of the hosts. Proposed migrations are removed and/or prioritized to prevent network saturation in the cluster.
Claims20
A computer-implemented method, comprising:
- receiving statistics associated with a plurality of hosts within a cluster;
- ranking a candidate set of hosts from the plurality of hosts based at least in part on a system resource standard deviation analysis of system resources comprising processor utilization and memory utilization to select the candidate set of hosts according to lowest system resource standard deviation among the plurality of hosts;
- filtering the candidate set of hosts to select a subset of the candidate set of hosts, the filtering being based at least in part on a network resource standard deviation analysis of network resources to select the subset of the candidate set of hosts by comparing a respective network resource standard deviation to a user controllable or user-defined threshold setting used for load balancing decisions in the cluster;
- identifying a proposed migration of a virtual computing instance (VCI) from a current host to a candidate host of the subset of the candidate set of hosts;
- and
- in response to determining, based at least in part on an internal traffic statistic represented within the statistics, that the candidate host is network unsaturated, allowing the proposed migration.
A system, comprising:
- at least one memory storing a scheduler;
- a plurality of hosts within a cluster;
- and
- at least one processor programmed to execute the scheduler to:
- receive statistics associated with the plurality of hosts within the cluster;
- rank a candidate set of hosts from the plurality of hosts based at least in part on a system resource standard deviation analysis of system resources comprising processor utilization and memory utilization to select the candidate set of hosts according to lowest system resource standard deviation among the plurality of hosts;
- filter the candidate set of hosts to select a subset of the candidate set of hosts, the filtering being based at least in part on a network resource standard deviation analysis of network resources to select the subset of the candidate set of hosts by comparing a respective network resource standard deviation to a user controllable or user-defined threshold setting used for load balancing decisions in the cluster;
- identify a proposed migration of a virtual computing instance (VCI) from a current host to a candidate host of the subset of the candidate set of hosts;
- and
- in response to determining, based at least in part on an internal traffic statistic represented within the statistics, that the candidate host is network unsaturated, allow the proposed migration.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium embodying computer-readable instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a computing device, direct the computing device to perform a method comprising:
- receiving statistics associated with a plurality of hosts within a cluster;
- ranking a candidate set of hosts from the plurality of hosts based at least in part on a system resource standard deviation analysis of system resources comprising processor utilization and memory utilization to select the candidate set of hosts according to lowest system resource standard deviation among the plurality of hosts;
- filtering the candidate set of hosts to select a subset of the candidate set of hosts, the filtering being based at least in part on a network resource standard deviation analysis of network resources to select the subset of the candidate set of hosts by comparing a respective network resource standard deviation to a user controllable or user-defined threshold setting used for load balancing decisions in the cluster;
- identifying a proposed migration of a virtual computing instance (VCI) from a current host to a candidate host of the list of the subset of the candidate set of hosts;
- and
- in response to determining, based at least in part on an internal traffic statistic represented within the statistics, that the candidate host is network unsaturated, allowing the proposed migration.
