Abstract
A system and method for performing an in-service optical time domain reflectometry test, an in-service insertion loss test, and an in-service optical frequency domain reflectometry test using a same wavelength as the network communications for point-to-point or point-to-multipoint optical fiber networks while maintaining continuity of network communications are disclosed.
Claims31
An optical transceiver for data communication and having optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) and/or optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) function for optical fiber measurement comprising:
- a bi-directional optical interface configured to couple to a first optical fiber and configured to couple to a second optical fiber;
- a bi-directional electrical interface;
- an optical transmitter optically coupled to the bi-directional optical interface and configured to emit optical signals into the first optical fiber;
- a laser driver electrically coupled to the optical transmitter and the laser driver configured to electrically drive the optical transmitter;
- a first optical receiver coupled optically to the bi-directional optical interface and configured to receive optical signals from the first optical fiber and perform optical-to-electrical conversion of the received optical signals;
- a first transimpedance amplifier (TIA) electrically coupled to the first optical receiver and configured to amplify the output of the first optical receiver;
- a second optical receiver coupled optically to the bi-directional optical interface and configured to receive optical signals from the second optical fiber and perform optical-to-electrical conversion of the received optical signals;
- a second transimpedance amplifier (TIA) electrically coupled to the second optical receiver and configured to amplify the output of the second optical receiver;
- a data recovery unit electrically coupled to the second TIA and wherein the data recovery unit recovers data from the second TIA and the data recovery unit is electrically coupled to the bi-directional electrical interface;
- a controller electrically coupled to the laser driver and wherein the controller is configured to perform an OTDR and/or OFDR function by signaling the laser driver to drive the optical transmitter to emit an OTDR/OFDR signal and the controller is electrically coupled to the first TIA and wherein the controller is configured to measure at least a portion of the OTDR/OFDR signal reflected and/or backscattered by the first optical fiber from the first TIA, and whereby
- the optical transceiver can receive data on optical signals from the second optical fiber and electrically communicate the data through the bi-directional electrical interface as well as receive data through the bi-directional electrical interface and emit the data with optical signals into the first optical fiber and the controller can perform an OTDR and/or OFDR function on the first optical fiber.
