Abstract

Techniques are disclosed relating to automated operations management. In various embodiments, a computer system accesses operational information that defines commands for an operational scenario and accesses blueprints that describe operational entities in a target computer environment related to the operational scenario. The computer system implements the operational scenario for the target computer environment. The implementing may include executing a hierarchy of controller modules that include an orchestrator controller module at top level of the hierarchy that is executable to carry out the commands by issuing instructions to controller modules at a next level. The controller modules may be executable to manage the operational entities according to the blueprints to complete the operational scenario. In various embodiments, the computer system includes additional features such as an application programming interface (API), a remote routing engine, a workflow engine, a reasoning engine, a security engine, and a testing engine.

Dependent claims

A method, comprising:

implementing, by a computer system, an operational scenario within a target computing environment having a hierarchy of components that include operational entities and an orchestrator controller module at a top level of the hierarchy that is operable to perform the implementing of the operational scenario by issuing a set of commands to controller modules at a next level of the hierarchy, and wherein a given controller module is operable to manage one or more of the operational entities by changing states of the one or more operational entities;
sending, by the computer system to one or more of the controller modules, requests for the one or more controller modules to identify injectable fault conditions supported by the one or more controller modules;
receiving, by the computer system from the one or more controller modules, information that identifies a set of injectable fault conditions;
receiving, by the computer system, an indication that a particular one of the set of commands has been issued;
selecting, by the computer system, a fault condition from the set of injectable fault conditions;
and
in response to receiving the indication, instructing, by the computer system, one of the controller modules to inject the fault condition with respect to one of the operational entities to test the target computing environment.

A non-transitory computer readable medium having program instructions stored thereon that are capable of causing a computer system to perform operations comprising:

receiving information about a hierarchy of components within a target computing environment, wherein the information includes information about a set of commands being issued to ones of the components to implement an operational scenario, wherein the hierarchy of components includes operational entities and an orchestrator controller module at a top level of the hierarchy that is operable to implement the operational scenario by issuing the set of commands to controller modules at a next level of the hierarchy, wherein a given controller module is operable to manage one or more of the operational entities by changing states of the one or more operational entities;
sending, to the set of controller modules, requests to identify injectable fault conditions supported by the controller modules;
receiving, from the controller modules, information that identifies a set of injectable fault conditions;
based on the information, determining that a particular one of the set of commands has been issued;
selecting a fault condition from the set of injectable fault conditions;
and
in response to the determining, instructing a controller module in the hierarchy to inject the fault condition with respect to an operational entity to test the target computing environment.

providing, to a test engine, information that identifies a set of injectable fault conditions supported by a controller module included within a component hierarchy of a target computing environment, wherein the component hierarchy include operational entities and an orchestrator controller module at a top level of the component hierarchy that is operable to implement an operational scenario by issuing a set of commands to controller modules at a next level of the component hierarchy, and wherein a given controller module is operable to manage one or more of the operational entities by changing states of the one or more operational entities;
receiving, from the test engine, an instruction to inject a fault condition determined from the set of injectable fault conditions and based on a particular one of the set of commands being issued;
and
causing injection of the fault condition with respect to an operational entity of the component hierarchy to test the target computing environment.
