Customized reflection profiles for retro-reflective display system optimization

A projection display, comprising:

• a retro-reflective display screen comprising a plurality of retro-reflective elements including some that are arranged differently from each other to have different return angles, formed between a path of an incident light beam from a projector and paths of reflected light beams returned by the retro-reflective elements, such that the retro-reflective display screen is configured to display an image to a viewer at a viewing distance from a major surface of the retro-reflective display screen,
• wherein the different return angles are such that an area in a vertical plane at the viewing distance that is crossed by the reflected light beams to form the image comprises a plurality of light distribution regions that collectively form a band of light that extends in a vertical direction normal to a ground.

A projection display, comprising:

• a retro-reflective display screen comprising a plurality of retro-reflective elements including some that are arranged differently from each other to have different return angles, formed between by a path of an incident light beam from a projector and paths of reflected light beams returned by the retro-reflective elements, such that the retro-reflective display screen is configured to display an image to a viewer at a viewing distance from a major surface of the retro-reflective display screen,
• wherein the different return angles are such that an area in a vertical plane at the viewing distance that is crossed by the reflected light beams to form the image forms a band of light that extends in a vertical direction normal to a ground, and
• wherein the band of light is sufficiently narrow in a horizontal direction such that the image is substantially not visible from positions in the vertical plane that are laterally adjacent to the viewer corresponding to return angles greater than about +1 degree and less than about −1 degree with respect to the incident light beam.
