Abstract
A surgical tool for use with a robotic system that includes a tool drive assembly that is operatively coupled to a control unit of the robotic system that is operable by inputs from an operator and is configured to robotically-generate output motions. A drive system is configured to interface with a corresponding portion of the tool drive assembly for receiving the robotically-generated output motions and applying the output motions to a drive shaft assembly which is configured to apply control motions to a surgical end effector operably coupled thereto. A manually-actuatable control system operably interfaces with the drive shaft assembly to facilitate the selective application of manually-generated control motions to the drive shaft assembly.
Claims15
A surgical stapler, comprising:
- an elongate shaft;
- an articulation joint;
- and
- an end effector articulatable relative to said elongate shaft about said articulation joint, wherein said end effector comprises:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;
- and
- a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein, wherein said staple cartridge comprises a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein said staples are deployable progressively from said proximal end to said distal end;
- and
- a motor-driven firing drive, comprising:
- a rotatable input drive comprising a threaded transmission portion, wherein said rotatable input drive is rotatable in a first direction and a second direction;
- a flexible output shaft configured to be actuated by said rotatable input drive, wherein said flexible output shaft comprises:
- a hollow body portion comprising an intermediate section and a plurality of slits defined in said intermediate section, wherein said intermediate section extends through said articulation joint;
- and
- a longitudinal axis, wherein said hollow body portion is constrained from revolving about said longitudinal axis, wherein said rotatable input drive is configured to translate said flexible output shaft distally when said rotatable input drive is rotated in said first direction, wherein said rotatable input drive is configured to translate said flexible output shaft proximally when said rotatable input drive is rotated in said second direction, wherein said flexible output shaft is movable through said first jaw and said second jaw during a staple firing stroke when said flexible output shaft is actuated by said rotatable input drive.
A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:
- an elongate shaft;
- an end effector, comprising:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;
- and
- a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein;
- an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is articulatable relative to said elongate shaft about said articulation joint;
- and
- a motor-driven firing drive, comprising:
- a rotatable input drive system comprising a threaded transmission portion, wherein said rotatable input drive system is rotatable in a first direction and a second direction;
- and
- a flexible output shaft configured to be actuated by said rotatable input drive system, wherein said flexible output shaft comprises:
- a hollow body portion comprising an intermediate section and a plurality of intrinsic articulation joints defined in said intermediate section, wherein said plurality of intrinsic articulation joints comprises a plurality of cuts, and wherein said intermediate section extends through said articulation joint;
- and
- a longitudinal axis, wherein said flexible output shaft is constrained from revolving about said longitudinal axis, wherein said rotatable input drive system is configured to translate said flexible output shaft toward said end effector when said rotatable input drive system is rotated in said first direction, wherein said rotatable input drive system is configured to translate said flexible output shaft away from said end effector when said rotatable input drive system is rotated in said second direction, and wherein said flexible output shaft is movable through said first jaw and said second jaw during a staple firing stroke when said flexible output shaft is actuated by said rotatable input drive system.
A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:
- an elongate shaft;
- an articulation joint;
- and
- an end effector attached to said elongate shaft by way of said articulation joint, wherein said end effector comprises:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;
- and
- a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein, wherein said staples are deployable during a staple firing stroke;
- and
- a motor-driven firing drive, comprising:
- a rotatable input drive comprising a threaded transmission portion, wherein said rotatable input drive is rotatable in a first direction and a second direction;
- and
- a flexible output drive member configured to be actuated by said rotatable input drive, wherein said flexible output drive member comprises:
- a hollow body portion comprising an intermediate section and a plurality of slots defined in said intermediate section, wherein said intermediate section extends through said articulation joint;
- and
- a longitudinal axis, wherein said hollow body portion is constrained from revolving about said longitudinal axis, wherein said rotatable input drive is configured to translate said flexible output drive member distally when said rotatable input drive is rotated in said first direction, wherein said rotatable input drive is configured to translate said flexible output drive member proximally when said rotatable input drive is rotated in said second direction, wherein said flexible output drive member is movable through said first jaw and said second jaw during a staple firing stroke when said flexible output drive member is actuated by said rotatable input drive.
