Abstract
The present invention provides devices and systems for use at the point of care. The methods devices of the invention are directed toward automatic detection of analytes in a bodily fluid. The components of the device are modular to allow for flexibility and robustness of use with the disclosed methods for a variety of medical applications.
Claims20
A point-of-care system for detecting an analyte in a biological sample, the system comprising:
- a cartridge comprising:
- a plurality of addressable reagent units configured to contain cartridge reagents for running reactions for detecting the analyte;
- and
- a sample unit configured to receive the biological sample;
- an assay unit configured to receive the biological sample from the sample unit and the cartridge reagents from the plurality of addressable reagent units, wherein the assay unit comprises a reaction site having thereon an immobilized binding reagent that is configured to yield a signal indicative of the presence of the analyte in the biological sample;
- a fluid transfer device coupled to the assay unit and comprising a programmable processor, wherein the fluid transfer device is configured to draw the biological sample and at least one of the cartridge reagents into the assay unit and into contact with the reaction site according to a protocol corresponding to the analyte, wherein the protocol comprises:
- instructions for moving the assay unit to a location of the sample unit and to locations of one or more of the plurality of addressable reagent units;
- a sequence for transferring the biological sample and the cartridge reagents to the assay unit;
- and
- an amount of each of the biological sample and the cartridge reagents to transfer to the assay unit;
- and
- a detection assembly configured to detect an intensity of the signal indicative of the presence of the analyte.

- a sample unit configured to receive the biological sample;
- an assay unit configured to receive the biological sample from the sample unit and the cartridge reagents from the plurality of addressable reagent units, wherein the assay unit comprises a reaction site having thereon an immobilized binding reagent that is configured to yield an optical signal indicative of the presence of the analyte in the biological sample;
- a reader assembly configured to receive the cartridge and the assay unit to perform an assay to detect the analyte, the reader assembly comprising:
- a fluid transfer device configured to be coupled to the assay unit and comprising a programmable processor, wherein the fluid transfer device is configured to draw the biological sample and the cartridge reagents into the assay unit and into contact with the reaction site according to a protocol corresponding to the analyte, wherein the protocol comprises instructions for moving the assay unit to a location of the sample unit and to a location of one or more of the plurality of addressable reagent units, a sequence for transferring the biological sample and the cartridge reagents to the assay unit, and an amount of each of the biological sample and the cartridge reagents to transfer to the assay unit;
