Abstract
A shingle includes a substrate having an asphalt coating on a top surface of the substrate and on a bottom surface of the substrate. A surface layer of granules is embedded in the asphalt on the top surface of the substrate. A backdust layer of particles is embedded in the asphalt on the bottom surface of the substrate. A sealant is disposed on the backdust. A hydrophobic material is applied to the sealant.
Claims12
A package, comprising:
- two or more shingles in a stacked configuration, each of the two or more shingles comprising:
- a substrate infiltrated with asphalt forming a first asphalt coating on a top surface of the substrate and a second asphalt coating on a bottom surface of the substrate;
- a surface layer of granules embedded in the first asphalt coating;
- a backdust layer of particles embedded in the second asphalt coating;
- and
- a hydrophobic material disposed on at least one of the surface layer of granules and the backdust layer of particles;
- wherein the hydrophobic material extends a distance between about 0.5 inches and about 3 inches from at least one edge of the shingle:
- wherein the two or more shingles are stacked such that the hydrophobic material of the shingles prevents moisture from infiltrating between the shingles.
