A catalyst comprising a porous carbon composite, wherein the carbon composite comprises pores with a BJH pore volume between 0.0100 cm3 g−1 to less than 0.1000 cm3 g−1, the catalyst further comprising ferric sulfate dispersed within the pores of the carbon composite, the ferric sulfate being 5-20 wt. % based on the total weight of the catalyst.
