Abstract
The present disclosure relates to methods of treating at least one symptom of a mental disorder or disease of the central nervous system in a subject by modulating the amount of GABA produced in the subject's gut. The present disclosure also relates to methods of culturing the bacterial strain new bacterial strains. Also disclosed are methods of identifying bacterial strains capable of producing GABA, and engineering strains to produce GABA.

A therapeutic composition comprising at least one purified bacterial population that produces GABA at a pH range of between 4.5 and 7.5, the at least one purified bacterial population consisting of bacteria comprising a 16s rDNA sequence at least 98% identical to a 16s rDNA sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID Nos. 1-4, 8, 10, 12, 16-18, 28-29 and 81.
A composition in the form of a prebiotic, probiotic or a medical food, the composition comprising at least one purified bacterial population that produces GABA at a pH range of between 4.5 and 7.5, the at least one purified bacterial population consisting of bacteria comprising a 16s rDNA sequence at least 98% identical to a 16s rDNA sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID Nos. 1-4, 8, 10, 12, 16-18, 28-29 and 81.
