Optimized network latency using in-band telemetry

A method comprising:

• receiving, by use of a processor of a network controller, a telemetry packet from an egress network node, the egress network node connected to a receiving host, wherein the egress network node is one of a plurality of network nodes within a communication pathway between a sending host and the receiving host, wherein a data flow of data packets being transmitted from the sending host to the receiving host are queued in a designated queue of an egress port of a network node of the plurality of network nodes in the communication pathway;
• determining, by use of a processor of the network controller, that the telemetry packet indicates that the designated queue is congested;
• and
• sending, from the network controller, a command to the network node with the congested designated queue to change the data flow from the designated queue to a different queue of the egress port such that data packets from transmitted between the sending host and the receiving host are queued in the different queue.

A program product comprising a non-volatile computer readable storage device with program code, the program code being configured to be executable by a processor to perform operations comprising:

• receiving, at a network controller, a telemetry packet from an egress network node, the egress network node connected to a receiving host, wherein the egress network node is one of a plurality of network nodes within a communication pathway between a sending host and the receiving host, wherein a data flow of data packets being transmitted from the sending host to the receiving host are queued in a designated queue of an egress port of a network node of the plurality of network nodes in the communication pathway;
• determining that the telemetry packet indicates that the designated queue is congested;
• and
• sending a command to the network node with the congested designated queue to change the data flow from the designated queue to a different queue of the egress port such that data packets from transmitted between the sending host and the receiving host are queued in the different queue.
