## Abstract

Methods and apparatus relating to Priority Based Application Event Control (PAEC) to reduce application events are described. In one embodiment, PAEC may determine which applications (and their corresponding sub-system(s)) may cause a processor or platform to exit a low power consumption state. In an embodiment, PAEC may determine which applications (and their corresponding sub-system(s)) may resume operations after a processor or platform exit a low power consumption state. Other embodiments are also claimed and disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions stored thereon that when executed by a system cause the system to:
provide a user of a smart phone with current policy settings for a plurality of applications, the current policy settings comprising policy information to indicate which of the plurality of applications are allowed to wake the smart phone from a low power consumption state, the low power consumption state in which a processor of the smart phone is in a sleep state;
allow the user to update the policy information for a first application of the plurality of applications to indicate a priority of the first application to wake the smart phone from the low power consumption state; and
allow the first application to cause the smart phone to exit from the low power consumption state based on the updated policy information.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to mask wake events from a second application of the plurality of applications based on the current policy settings.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to coalesce a plurality of low priority wake events from a first subset of the plurality of applications and deliver the low priority wake events at a later time frame.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to provide user control of a policy setting on a per application basis.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein the instructions are implemented in an operating system.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to allow the first application to cause a central processing unit of the smart phone to exit from the low power consumption state based on the updated policy information.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to allow one or more sub-systems, corresponding to the one or more of the plurality of applications, to be powered on based on the policy information and after the central processing unit exits the low power consumption state.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7, wherein the policy information indicates which of the one or more sub-systems corresponds to which of the one or more of the plurality of applications.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to provide feedback information regarding wake events during the low power consumption state.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to store the updated policy information in a secure storage.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to allow the first application to cause the smart phone to exit from the low power consumption state that comprises a platform low power state in which the plurality of applications are halted.

### Claim 12

A system comprising:
a central processing unit;
a computer-readable medium coupled to the central processing unit to store instructions that when executed by the central processing unit cause the system to:
provide a user of the system with current policy settings for a plurality of applications, the current policy settings comprising policy information to indicate which of the plurality of applications are allowed to wake the central processing unit from a low power consumption state comprising an idle state;
allow the user to update the policy information for a first application of the plurality of applications to indicate a priority of the first application to wake the central processing unit from the low power consumption state; and
allow the first application to cause the central processing unit to exit from the low power consumption state based on the updated policy information;
a touchscreen coupled to the central processing unit; and
an audio device coupled to the central processing unit.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the central processing unit further comprises a hardware logic to execute the instructions.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the central processing unit comprises a plurality of cores.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The system of claim 14, wherein the plurality of cores comprise at least two asymmetrical cores.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the system further comprises a power management unit coupled to the central processing unit.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The system of claim 16, wherein the power management unit is to cause the central processing unit to enter a plurality of low power consumption states including the low power consumption state and one or more other power consumption states lower than an operating power consumption state.

### Claim 18

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions stored thereon that when executed by a system cause the system to:
provide a user of a smart phone with current policy settings for a plurality of applications, the current policy settings comprising policy information to indicate which of the plurality of applications are allowed to wake circuitry of the smart phone from a low power consumption state in which the circuitry is in a sleep state;
allow the user to update the policy information for a first application of the plurality of applications to indicate a priority of the first application to wake the circuitry from the low power consumption state; and
allow the first application to cause the circuitry to exit from the low power consumption state based on the updated policy information, to enable the first application to be serviced.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 18, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to mask wake events from a second application of the plurality of applications based on the current policy settings.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 18, further comprising instructions that when executed enable the system to coalesce a plurality of low priority wake events from a first subset of the plurality of applications and deliver the low priority wake events at a later time frame.
