Crowd sourced privacy preserving access point mapping

A non-transitory computer readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the processors to perform operations comprising:

• establishing, by a user device, a wireless connection to a first access point;
• obtaining, by the user device, first access point data corresponding to the first access point, the first access point data including a first access point identifier and a first network identifier;
• determining, by the user device, a current location of the user device when connected to the first access point;
• detecting, by the user device, a plurality of second access points near the current location of the user device;
• obtaining, by the user device, a plurality of second access point data corresponding to the plurality of second access points, the plurality of second access point data including for each of the second access points a second access point identifier and a second network identifier;
• determining that one or more of the second access points are related to the first access point based on network identifiers associated with the first access point and the second access points;
• and
• sending, by the user device to a server device, an access point data report that includes the first access point identifier, a collection of one or more related access point identifiers, and the current location of the user device, wherein the access point data report excludes network identifiers associated with access points identified in the access point data report.

A system comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• a non-transitory computer readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the processors to perform operations comprising:
• establishing, by a user device, a wireless connection to a first access point;
• obtaining, by the user device, first access point data corresponding to the first access point, the first access point data including a first access point identifier and a first network identifier;
• determining, by the user device, a current location of the user device when connected to the first access point;
• detecting, by the user device, a plurality of second access points near the current location of the user device;
• obtaining, by the user device, a plurality of second access point data corresponding to the plurality of second access points, the plurality of second access point data including for each of the second access points a second access point identifier and a second network identifier;
• determining that one or more of the second access points are related to the first access point based on network identifiers associated with the first access point and the second access points;
• and
• sending, by the user device to a server device, an access point data report that includes the first access point identifier, a collection of one or more related access point identifiers, and the current location of the user device, wherein the access point data report excludes network identifiers associated with access points identified in the access point data report.
