Techniques to reduce SCell measurements in millimeter wave frequency range

An apparatus for wireless communications, comprising:

• a memory configured to store instructions;
• and
• a processor communicatively coupled with the memory, the processor configured to execute the instructions to:
• receive, at a user equipment (UE), a request from a network to perform measurement reporting by periodically reporting signal measurements for a plurality of beams associated with a secondary cell (SCell);
• measure, in response to the request, a signal quality for at least one beam from the plurality of beams associated with the SCell to generate a current measurement metric;
• determine whether a difference between the current measurement metric and a previously reported measurement metric for the at least one beam is less than a threshold;
• and
• configure the UE to disable the measurement reporting based on determining that the difference between the current measurement metric and the previously reported measurement metric for the at least one beam is less than the threshold, wherein disabling the measurement reporting includes omitting reporting the current measurement metric for the at least one beam to the network.

An apparatus for wireless communications, comprising:

• means for receiving, at a user equipment (UE), a request from a network to perform measurement reporting by periodically reporting signal measurements for a plurality of beams associated with a secondary cell (SCell);
• means for measuring, in response to the request, a signal quality for at least one beam from the plurality of beams associated with the SCell to generate a current measurement metric;
• means for determining whether a difference between the current measurement metric and a previously reported measurement metric for the at least one beam is less than a threshold;
• and
• means for configuring the UE to disable the measurement reporting based on determining that the difference between the current measurement metric and the previously reported measurement metric for the at least one beam is less than the threshold, wherein disabling the measurement reporting includes omitting reporting the current measurement metric for the at least one beam to the network.

A non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer executable code, the code when executed by a processor causes the processor to:

• receive, at a user equipment (UE), a request from a network to perform measurement reporting by periodically reporting signal measurements for a plurality of beams associated with a secondary cell (SCell);
• measure, in response to the request, a signal quality for at least one beam from the plurality of beams associated with the SCell to generate a current measurement metric;
• determine whether a difference between the current measurement metric and a previously reported measurement metric for the at least one beam is less than a threshold;
• and
• configure the UE to disable the measurement reporting based on determining that the difference between the current measurement metric and the previously reported measurement metric for the at least one beam is less than the threshold, wherein disabling the measurement reporting includes omitting reporting the current measurement metric for the at least one beam to the network.
