Abstract
Innovations in encoder-side options for intra block copy (“BC”) prediction mode facilitate intra BC prediction that is more effective in terms of rate-distortion performance and/or computational efficiency of encoding. For example, some of the innovations relate to concurrently performing block vector (“BV”) estimation and making block splitting decisions for a block. Other innovations relate to selectively merging blocks into a larger block during BV estimation.
Claims20
A computing device comprising one or more processing units and memory, wherein the computing device implements an encoder of video or images, the encoder being configured to perform operations comprising:
- encoding data for a picture using intra block copy prediction, including:
- for each of plural first coding blocks, identifying a block vector value associated with the coding block using block vector estimation, the block vector value indicating a displacement within the picture;
- and
- selectively merging two or more of the plural first coding blocks into a single second coding block larger than the plural first coding blocks, including, based on the block vector values associated with the two or more of the plural first coding blocks, merging the two or more of the plural first coding blocks into the single second coding block, the single second coding block being used in partitioning of the picture into coding units instead of using the two or more of the plural first coding blocks in the partitioning of the picture into coding units;
- and
- outputting the encoded data for the picture.
In a computing device with a video encoder or image encoder, a method comprising:
- with the video encoder or image encoder, encoding data for a picture using intra block copy prediction, including performing block vector estimation operations and block splitting decision operations concurrently for a current block of the picture, the block vector estimation operations determining a block vector value for the current block, the block vector value indicating a displacement within the picture, and the block splitting decision operations setting block size for the current block;
- and
- outputting, from the video encoder or image encoder, the encoded data for the picture.
One or more computer-readable media storing computer- executable instructions for causing a computing device, when programmed thereby, to perform operations, the one or more computer-readable media being selected from the group consisting of non-volatile memory, magnetic disk, CD-ROM, and DVD, the operations comprising:
- encoding data for a picture using intra block copy prediction, including:
- for each of plural first coding blocks, identifying a block vector value associated with the coding block using block vector estimation, the block vector value indicating a displacement within the picture;
- and
- selectively merging two or more of the plural first coding blocks into a single second coding block larger than the plural first coding blocks, including, based on the block vector values associated with the two or more of the plural first coding blocks, merging the two or more of the plural first coding blocks into the single second coding block, the single second coding block being used in partitioning of the picture into coding units instead of using the two or more of the plural first coding blocks in the partitioning of the picture into coding units;
- and
- outputting the encoded data for the picture.
