Contrast enhancement and reduction of noise in images from cameras

A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one processing device, cause the processing device to:

• identify one or more blocks in an electronic image that depicts text characters;
• identify one or more text blocks among the blocks that depict the text characters;
• identify a text contrast value for each of the text blocks;
• identify a type for each pixel in each of the text blocks based on the text contrast value, wherein the identified type is at least one of a background pixel type, a connected component pixel type, or a problem pixel type, and wherein the background pixel type indicates that the pixel is a part of a background of the electronic image, the connected component pixel type indicates that the pixel is part of a connected component depicted within the electronic image, and the problem pixel type indicates that the pixel is part of a connected component depicted within the electronic image and has an uncertain binarization;
• determine, for each pixel in each of the text blocks, a brightness for the pixel based on the identified type;
• and
• store, in at least one memory, the electronic image comprising the determined brightness for each pixel in each of the text blocks.

A system comprising:

• at least one memory that stores instructions;
• and
• at least one processing device configured to execute the instructions to:
• identify one or more blocks in an electronic image that depicts text characters;
• identify one or more text blocks among the blocks that depict the text characters;
• identify a text contrast value for each of the text blocks;
• identify a type for each pixel in each of the text blocks based on the text contrast value, wherein the identified type is at least one of a background pixel type, a connected component pixel type, or a problem pixel type, and wherein the background pixel type indicates that the pixel is a part of a background of the electronic image, the connected component pixel type indicates that the pixel is part of a connected component depicted within the electronic image, and the problem pixel type indicates that the pixel is part of a connected component depicted within the electronic image and has an uncertain binarization;
• determine, for each pixel in each of the text blocks, a brightness for the pixel based on the identified type;
• and
• store, in at least one memory, the electronic image comprising the determined brightness for each pixel in each of the text blocks.
