Abstract
Systems and methods for implementing radial density masking graphics rendering for use in applications such as head mounted displays (“HMDs”) are described. Exemplary algorithms are disclosed, according to which image resolution varies within an image depending on the distance of a particular point on the image from one or more fixation points. Reconstruction algorithms according to certain embodiments include three stages: (1) hole filling; (2) cross-cell blending; and (3) Gaussian blur.

A device comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform acts comprising:
- applying, to an image having pixels, a first mask to the pixels that are outside of a first inner circle portion of the image;
- rendering a first subview of the image that includes first image data corresponding to the first inner circle portion and the pixels masked by the first mask, the first inner circle portion having a first resolution;
- applying a second mask to substantially all of the pixels that are within the first inner circle portion;
- rendering a second subview of the image that includes second image data corresponding to a second outer ring portion of the image and the pixels masked by the second mask, the second outer ring portion surrounding the first inner circle portion and having a second resolution that is different than the first resolution;
- determining third image data that corresponds to a third portion of the image;
- applying a third mask to the second image data to generate fourth image data corresponding to an updated second outer ring portion of the image;
- identifying, within the second outer ring portion of the second subview:
- a masked pixel masked by the third mask,
- a first unmasked pixel, and
- a second unmasked pixel;
- determining a color value for the masked pixel based at least in part on a color value of the first unmasked pixel and a color value of the second unmasked pixel;
- determining a third resolution at which at least part of the third portion is to be rendered, the third resolution being different than the first resolution and the second resolution;
- generating fifth image data that corresponds to the at least part of the third portion having the third resolution;
- and
- generating sixth image data based at least in part on the first image data included in the first subview, the fourth image data, and the fifth image data.

- identifying, within the second outer ring portion of the second subview:
- a masked pixel masked by the third mask,
- a first unmasked pixel, and
- a second unmasked pixel;
- determining a color value for the masked pixel based at least in part on a color value of the first unmasked pixel and a color value of the second unmasked pixel;
- generating fifth image data corresponding to an updated third portion of the image, wherein at least part of the fifth image data has a third resolution that is different than the first resolution and the second resolution;
- and
- generating sixth image data based at least in part on:
- the first image data included in the first subview;
- the fourth image data;
- and
- the fifth image data.
