Enabling a Hadoop file system with POSIX compliance

A distributed file system (DFS) configured to store data in a General Parallel File system (GPFS) and interface with a Client Node configured to interface with a HADOOP Distributed File System (HDFS), the DFS comprising:

• a Name Node;
• and
• a plurality of Data Nodes comprising the GPFS,
• wherein the Name Node is configured to receive a request from the Client Node to access data within an HDFS file, the request including an HDFS filename of the HDFS file,
• wherein the Name Node is further configured to access first metadata using the HDFS filename to retrieve a GPFS filename of a GPFS file and a plurality of offsets into the GPFS file, and identifiers of the Data Nodes storing data of the GPFS file at the offsets,
• wherein the Name Node is further configured to send for each of the offsets, a first data structure to the Client Node that includes a corresponding one of the identifiers and a second data structure that includes the GPFS filename, a block size, and the corresponding offset,
• wherein the Client Node is configured to request for each of the received first data structures, data of the HDFS file by sending the corresponding second data structure to the data node associated with the offset within the corresponding second data structure, and
• wherein each of the data nodes are configured to respond to the Client Node for each of the received second data structure with part of the GPFS file using the GPFS filename, the block size, and the offset in the corresponding received second data structure.
