Abstract
Separation methods and systems for converting high concentrations of animal wastes into nutrients and other useful products such as struvite and potassium struvite. Advantageously, the system and methods do not require the addition of external chemicals other than an acid and a base.
Claims12
A process for treating manure in order to isolate a target precipitate, said process comprising:
- (a) providing a manure slurry;
- (b) acidifying the manure slurry to instigate nutrient release therefrom, wherein the acidification of the manure slurry comprises bubbling the manure slurry with CO2-enriched gas and adding at least one acid to the manure slurry, and wherein acidification occurs for time in a range from about 10 minutes to about 200 minutes;
- (c) separating nutrient-rich solution from nutrient-deficient solids;
- (d) precipitating the target precipitate by introducing at least one base to the nutrient-rich solution;
- and
- (e) collecting the target precipitate,
- wherein the at least one acid is selected from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and combinations thereof.
