Vehicle control device

A vehicle control device that controls a vehicle control system which includes a shift range switching system configured to switch a shift range by controlling a drive of a shift actuator, and an electric brake system configured to brake a vehicle by controlling a drive of a brake actuator, comprising:

• a drive control unit configured to control the drive of the shift actuator;
• an abnormality monitoring unit configured to monitor an abnormality of the shift range switching system;
• a presence determination unit configured to determine whether the driver is in a driver's seat;
• and
• a brake command unit configured to command the vehicle to be braked by the electric brake system, wherein
• when an abnormality of a range mismatch, which an actual shift range does not match a target shift range, and when the driver is absent, the vehicle control device executes a fail safe process different from a fail safe process when the driver is present, and
• when a P abnormality which the target shift range is the P range and the actual range is other than the P range occurs as the range mismatch abnormality,
• when a driver is present, the drive control unit stops the shift actuator, and
• when the driver is not present, the drive control unit stops the shift actuator, and the brake command unit commands the vehicle to be braked by the electric brake system.
