A solid electrolyte comprises a compound represented by a formula MgxAl2-yMyOz, where M is at least one selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Ti, and Zr; 0<x<1; 0.125≤y≤0.5; and 3.8≤z≤4.1.

A magnesium secondary battery comprising:
- a positive electrode;
- a negative electrode;
- and
- a solid electrolyte having magnesium ion conductivity,
- wherein the solid electrolyte comprises:
- a compound represented by a formula MgxAl2-yMyOz, where M is at least one selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Ti, and Zr;
- 0<x<1;
- 0.125≤y≤0.5;
- and 3.8≤z≤4.1.
