Abstract
A block copolymer forms a dielectric film with isolated polarizable domains. The block copolymer is a molecule selected to have an ionically functionalized end. The ionically functionalized end is selected to be less soluble in a solvent than another portion of the polymer such that, when a plurality of the block copolymer molecules are dissolved in the solvent, the first ends of the plurality of block copolymers interact with each other and aggregate to form isolated polarizable domains. The block copolymer forms an electrically isolating shell about a core comprised of the ionically functionalized ends. One or more additives may be disposed selectively within the core to increase the dielectric constant of the dielectric film.
Claims20
A dielectric film comprises:
- block copolymers organized in isolated polarizable domains, each of the block copolymers comprising an ionically functionalized block on a free end of the block copolymers and an electrically isolating block coupled to the ionically functionalized block, wherein the ionically functionalized block of each of the block copolymers is selected to be less soluble in a selected solvent than the electrically isolating block such that, when the block copolymers are dissolved in the selected solvent and a solution is prepared, the ionically functionalized ends of the block copolymers interact with each other and aggregate to form isolated polarizable domains before the block copolymers precipitate from the solution during forming of the dielectric film and remain as isolated polarizable domains after the solvent is removed and the dielectric film is formed.
A capacitor comprising a first electrode, a second electrode and a dielectric film separating the first electrode from the second electrode, the dielectric film comprises:
- block copolymers organized in isolated polarizable domains, each of the block copolymers comprising an ionically functionalized block on a free end of the block copolymers and an electrically isolating block coupled to the ionically functionalized block, wherein the ionically functionalized block of each of the block copolymers is selected to be less soluble in a selected solvent than the electrically isolating block such that, when the block copolymers are dissolved in the selected solvent, the ionically functionalized ends of the block copolymers interact with each other and aggregate to form isolated polarizable domains before the block copolymers precipitate from solution during forming of the dielectric film and remain as isolated polarizable domains after the solvent is removed and the dielectric film is formed.
