Roadway sensing systems

A system to detect or track objects, comprising:

• a sensing modality having a wide angle field of view that is installed at a stationary position in association with an area configured to include traffic, wherein the sensing modality is positioned to simultaneously detect a number of objects positioned within two crosswalks, a number of objects in a vicinity of a crosswalk or an intersection, or a number of objects traversing a stop line at an intersection;
• a communication device configured to communicate a data stream from the sensing modality to a processing resource that is remote from the sensing modality;
• and
• a controller remote from the sensing modality configured to direct the processing resource to execute automated processing of the data stream for the field of view of the sensing modality to:
• detect or track objects in the area;
• and
• distinguish the objects as motorized vehicles, human-powered vehicles, or pedestrians.

A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions executable by a processing resource, the instructions executable to:

• receive, from an area configured to include traffic, data input from a discrete sensor type about the traffic in the area that is sensed in a time period, wherein the data includes detection of an event associated with a particular point of interest, including collision, congestion, stalled motorized vehicles or human-powered vehicles, and obstructive debris;
• assign a time stamp from a common clock to each of a number of putative points of interest, associated with the traffic, in the data input from the discrete sensor type;
• determine a location for each of the number of putative points of interest in the data input from the discrete sensor type in the area;
• and
• determine whether a notification of the event is transmitted to an instrumented vehicle associated with the location.

An apparatus to detect or track objects, comprising:

• a sensor that is installed at a stationary position in association with an area configured to include traffic;
• and
• a controller configured to direct automated processing of a data stream for at least a portion of a field of view from the sensor to:
• define geometry in the area and associated characteristics, the characteristics including sensed traffic flow and trajectories;
• detect a non-instrumented object in the field of view;
• detect information related to the non-instrumented object, wherein the information includes a location of the non-instrumented object or a change in a sensed traffic pattern related to the non-instrumented object;
• and
• determine whether a notification of the location or the change in the sensed traffic pattern related to the non-instrumented object is transmitted to an instrumented vehicle or an instrumented transportation-related infrastructure.
