## Abstract

The present invention includes a device for effecting deformation of a sclera of an eye, including an expandable, mesh tube having holes dispersed through an entire surface thereof and with first and second tapered ends, and inserted unexpanded to deform the sclera when expanded. A central portion is intrascleral, with the first and second tapered ends external to the sclera on top of an intact scleral surface to deform during expansion, and simultaneously causes the sclera to be deformed so that the sclera moves towards the inside of the eye while simultaneously causing the sclera to move towards the outside of the eye. The mesh tube includes struts, connecting points of the struts are of different sizes, the first and second tapered ends and the connecting points within the tapered ends are thicker than the connecting points of the mesh tube, and the mesh tube includes fixation tabs.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for using a device for effecting deformation of a sclera of an eye, the method comprising:
inserting an expandable, mesh tube having holes dispersed through an entire surface thereof and with first and second tapered ends into a sclera of an eye in an unexpanded state and deforming the sclera with the mesh tube in an expanded state;
locating a central portion of the mesh tube intrascleral and with the first and second tapered ends each external to the sclera on top of an intact scleral surface in order to deform the sclera due to the expansion by the mesh tube from the unexpanded state to the expanded state; and
simultaneously causing with the mesh tube in the expanded state the sclera to be deformed so that the sclera moves towards the inside of the eye while simultaneously causing the sclera to move towards the outside of the eye,
wherein the mesh tube includes struts,
connecting points of the struts are of different sizes,
the first and second tapered ends and the connecting points within the tapered ends are thicker than the connecting points of the mesh tube, and
the mesh tube includes fixation tabs.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
locating a base of the first and second tapered ends of the mesh tube so as to lie in a plane below a horizontal plane of an outer diameter of the mesh tube when the mesh tube is in the expanded state.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the mesh tube is made of biocompatible titanium and nickel, stainless steel or an expandable plastic that is or is not biodegradable.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the mesh tube has an unexpanded diameter from 0.2 mm to 0.7 mm.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the mesh tube is approximately 2 mm to 15 mm in length.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the mesh tube is approximately 5 to 6 mm in length.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second tapered ends of the mesh tube each have a length of approximately 5% to 35% of a total length of the mesh tube.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
locating the fixation tabs so as to engage the cut edges of the sclera.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs engage any part of the sclera.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
locating the fixation tabs so as to be located in the front and back of the mesh tube.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs expand and protrude when the mesh tube expands.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs face in opposite directions.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs face in the same direction.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs are located any place along the length of the mesh tube.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs are made of the same material as the mesh tube.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs are made of a different material.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs have ends that are pointed, sharp, rounded or square.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the sides of the fixation tabs have smooth, irregular or jagged edges and/or surfaces.

### Claim 19 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the fixation tabs protrude from the mesh tube from 100 to 1000 microns.

### Claim 20 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the device is coated or impregnated with a pharmaceutical agent that eludes from the mesh tube over time.
