Abstract
Methods of operation of liquid and gaseous multi-fuel compression ignition engines that may be operated on a gaseous fuel or a liquid fuel, or a combination of both a gaseous fuel and a liquid fuel at the same time and in some embodiments, in the same combustion event. Various embodiments are disclosed.
Claims10
A method of operating a camless, electronically controlled compression ignition engine having at least one combustion cylinder having a liquid fuel injector and a gaseous fuel injector for providing a liquid fuel and gaseous fuel to the combustion cylinder, the method comprising:
- activating the gaseous fuel injector to inject the gaseous fuel to the combustion cylinder during an intake stroke of the engine;
- adding air to the combustion cylinder during the intake stroke of the engine to form a gaseous fuel and air mixture;
- compressing the gaseous fuel and air mixture when a piston in the combustion cylinder is at or near a top dead center position;
- and
- pulsing, starting at a crankshaft angle past the top dead center position, the liquid fuel injector to inject the liquid fuel, in a series of injection pulses, to the combustion cylinder during a combustion stroke of the engine;
- wherein the gaseous fuel is compressed natural gas.
