Compression forward error correction coding using a tree structure

A receiver device comprising:

• circuitry configured to determine data vector estimates and a nub vector from signals received at the receiver device over one or more communication channels;
• circuitry configured to calculate determiner estimates from the data vector estimates, each determiner estimate comprising a function of a respective data vector estimate;
• circuitry configured to generate determiners representative of parity information by decoding the determiner estimates, wherein the decoding comprises
• calculating a first codeword estimate from the determiner estimates using at least one recursion of a mathematical operation;
• decoding a first codeword from the first codeword estimate using a first forward error correction (FEC) code and the nub vector;
• calculating a second codeword estimate from the determiner estimates and the first codeword;
• decoding a second codeword from the second codeword estimate using a second FEC code and the nub vector;
• calculating a third codeword estimate from the determiner estimates and one or both of the first codeword and the second codeword;
• decoding a third codeword from the third codeword estimate using a third FEC code and the nub vector;
• and
• calculating the determiners using a plurality of codewords comprising the first, second, and third codewords, wherein at least one of the plurality of codewords comprises more than 6 terms, and
• circuitry configured to generate data vectors from the data vector estimates using the determiners, wherein the data vectors are representative of payload information, wherein the determiners are representative of parity information dependent on the payload information, and wherein the nub vector is representative of compressed parity information dependent on the parity information.

A method performed at a transmitter device, the method comprising:

• generating determiners from data vectors, each data vector representative of payload information, and each determiner representative of parity information dependent on the payload information;
• generating a nub vector by encoding the determiners, wherein the nub vector is representative of compressed parity information dependent on the parity information, wherein the encoding is mathematically equivalent to (i) calculating three or more forward error correction (FEC) codewords from the determiners and (ii) calculating the nub vector from the codewords, at least one of the codewords being calculated from at least one recursion of a mathematical operation, and at least one of the codewords comprising more than 6 terms;
• and
• transmitting signals representative of the plurality of data vectors and the nub vector over one or more communication channels.
