Abstract
The present application relates to a novel method for reductive degradation of perfluoroalkyl-containing compounds, such as perfluoroalkyl sulfonates, by activated carbon (AC) supported zero valent iron-nickel nanoparticles (nNi0Fe0).
Claims10
A method of degradation of one or more perfluoroalkyl-containing compound, wherein the method comprises:
- providing a mixture comprising one or more perfluoroalkyl-containing compound, wherein the perfluoroalkyl-containing compound is branched or straight chain perfluoroalkyl-containing sulfonate;
- providing particles comprising zero valent iron (Fe0) and zero valent nickel (Ni0) to the mixture, wherein said zero valent iron (Fe0) comprises Fe0 nanoparticles, wherein the surface of Fe0 nanoparticles is coated with zero valent nickel (Ni0);
- and wherein zero valent iron (Fe0) and zero valent nickel (Ni0) are supported by active carbon powders, and
- degrading the perfluoroalkyl-containing compound in the mixture, wherein the degradation involves cleavage of the sulfonate group and defluorination of said branched or straight chain perfluoroalkyl-containing sulfonate to provide inorganic sulfate,
- wherein the degradation is carried out between 25-100° C.
