The text and character selection is made by user contact with a touch sensitive screen. In order to allow for refinement of the selection, a second expanded view is implemented as compared to the original display configuration of the screen. Furthermore, the selection is described in relation to two endpoints of the block of text. Additionally, a point is specified as the point desired for insertion of the selected text. The expanded view is implemented along with the original view as required when making character selection. ## Claims ### Claim 1 A method, comprising: displaying text on a touch screen of a handheld electronic device, the display of text comprising an original display configuration; detecting a first input in a first area of the touch screen, the first area comprising a plurality of words, wherein the plurality of words are displayed using the original display configuration; displaying a plurality of enlarged words on the touch screen, wherein the plurality of enlarged words correspond to the plurality of words that were displayed using the original display configuration; detecting a selection of a first word from the plurality of enlarged words; in response to detecting the selection of the first word, stop displaying the plurality of enlarged words and resuming displaying the plurality of words, wherein the resuming displaying the plurality of words comprises highlighting the selected first word; detecting a second input in a second area of the touch screen, wherein the second input is distanced from the first input in the first area, the second area comprising a second plurality of words, wherein the second plurality of words are displayed using the original display configuration; displaying a second plurality of enlarged words on the touch screen, wherein the second plurality of enlarged words correspond to the second plurality of words that were displayed using the original display configuration; detecting a selection of a second word from the second plurality of enlarged words; and in response to detecting the selection of the second word, stop displaying the second plurality of enlarged words and resuming displaying the second plurality of words, wherein the resuming displaying the second plurality of words comprises highlighting text between the first word and the second word. ### Claim 2 (depends on 1) The method of claim 1, wherein the original display configuration is a default view of the handheld electronic device. ### Claim 3 (depends on 1) The method of claim 1, wherein more than three lines of text are shown on the touch screen when in the original display configuration. ### Claim 4 (depends on 1) The method of claim 1, further comprising: in response to detecting the first input in the first area of the touch screen, displaying an expanded view of the first area, wherein less than four lines of text are displayed on the touch screen in the expanded view of the first area. ### Claim 5 (depends on 4) The method of claim 4, wherein one line above and one line below the first area are displayed on the touch screen in the expanded view of the first area. ### Claim 6 (depends on 4) The method of claim 4, wherein less than six characters are displayed on either side of the first area in the expanded view. ### Claim 7 A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions to cause a processor to perform operations comprising: displaying text on a touch screen of a handheld electronic device, the display of text comprising an original display configuration; detecting a first input in a first area of the touch screen, the first area comprising a plurality of words, wherein the plurality of words are displayed using the original display configuration; displaying a plurality of enlarged words on the touch screen, wherein the plurality of enlarged words correspond to the plurality of words that were displayed using the original display configuration; detecting a selection of a first word from the plurality of enlarged words; in response to detecting the selection of the first word, stop displaying the plurality of enlarged words and resuming displaying the plurality of words, wherein the resuming displaying the plurality of words comprises highlighting the selected first word; detecting a second input in a second area of the touch screen, wherein the second input is distanced from the first input in the first area, the second area comprising a second plurality of words, wherein the second plurality of words are displayed using the original display configuration; displaying a second plurality of enlarged words on the touch screen, wherein the second plurality of enlarged words correspond to the second plurality of words that were displayed using the original display configuration; detecting a selection of a second word from the second plurality of enlarged words; and in response to detecting the selection of the second word, stop displaying the second plurality of enlarged words and resuming displaying the second plurality of words, wherein the resuming displaying the second plurality of words comprises highlighting text between the first word and the second word. ### Claim 8 (depends on 7) The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the original display configuration is a default view of the handheld electronic device. ### Claim 9 (depends on 7) The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein more than three lines of text are shown on the touch screen when in the original display configuration. ### Claim 10 (depends on 7) The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the operations further comprise: in response to detecting the first input in the first area of the touch screen, displaying an expanded view of the first area, wherein less than four lines of text are displayed on the touch screen in the expanded view of the first area. ### Claim 11 (depends on 10) The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein one line above and one line below the first area are displayed on the touch screen in the expanded view of the first area. ### Claim 12 (depends on 10) The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein less than six characters are displayed on either side of the first area in the expanded view. ### Claim 13 An apparatus, comprising: a memory configured to store text; a touch screen configured to: display text on the touch screen of a handheld electronic device, the display of text comprising an original display configuration; detect a first input in a first area of the touch screen, the first area comprising a plurality of words, wherein the plurality of words are displayed using the original display configuration; display a plurality of enlarged words on the touch screen, wherein the plurality of enlarged words correspond to the plurality of words that were displayed using the original display configuration; detect a selection of a first word from the plurality of enlarged words; in response to detecting the selection of the first word, stop displaying the plurality of enlarged words and resuming displaying the plurality of words, wherein the resuming displaying the plurality of words comprises highlighting the selected first word; detect a second input in a second area of the touch screen, wherein the second input is distanced from the first input in the first area, the second area comprising a second plurality of words, wherein the second plurality of words are displayed using the original display configuration; display a second plurality of enlarged words on the touch screen, wherein the second plurality of enlarged words correspond to the second plurality of words that were displayed using the original display configuration; detect a selection of a second word from the second plurality of enlarged words; and in response to detecting the selection of the second word, stop displaying the second plurality of enlarged words and resuming displaying the second plurality of words, wherein the resuming displaying the second plurality of words comprises highlighting text between the first word and the second word. ### Claim 14 (depends on 13) The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the original display configuration is a default view of the handheld electronic device. ### Claim 15 (depends on 13) The apparatus of claim 13, wherein more than three lines of text are shown on the touch screen when in the original display configuration. ### Claim 16 (depends on 13) The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the touch screen is further configured to: in response to detecting the first input in the first area of the touch screen, displaying an expanded view of the first area, wherein less than four lines of text are displayed on the touch screen in the expanded view of the first area. ### Claim 17 (depends on 16) The apparatus of claim 16, wherein one line above and one line below the first area are displayed on the touch screen in the expanded view of the first area. ### Claim 18 (depends on 16) The apparatus of claim 16, wherein less than six characters are displayed on either side of the first area in the expanded view.
