## Abstract

The present invention generally relates to an anchoring and sealing tool. In one aspect, downhole tool for use in a wellbore is provided. The tool includes a tubular having a tapered outer surface. The tool further includes an expandable annular member disposed on the tubular. The expandable member has an anchor portion. The tool further includes a seal member disposed in a groove of the expandable annular member. The seal member has one or more anti-extrusion bands, wherein the seal member and the anchor portion are configured to be expandable radially outward into contact with the wellbore as the expandable annular member moves along the tapered outer surface of the tubular.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of creating a seal between a downhole tool and a tubular, the method comprising:
positioning the downhole tool within the tubular located within a wellbore, the downhole tool including a mandrel and an expandable annular member, wherein the expandable annular member includes a seal portion and the mandrel includes a first portion with a first thickness and a second portion with a second greater thickness, wherein the seal portion includes a seal member that is disposed in a groove formed on an outer surface of the expandable annular member, the seal member having at least one anti-extrusion band; and
moving the expandable annular member along the mandrel from the first portion of the mandrel to the second portion of the mandrel which causes the seal portion to create a seal with the tubular.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein moving the expandable annular member along the mandrel from the first portion of the mandrel to the second portion of the mandrel radially expands the expandable annular member which causes the seal portion to create the seal with the tubular.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising closing a gap defined between a side of the seal member and a side of the groove upon expansion of the expandable annular member.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein the gap is closed by filing the gap with a portion of the seal member.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, the expandable annular member further comprising an anchor portion.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the moving of the expandable annular member along the mandrel from the first portion of the mandrel to the second portion of the mandrel causes the anchor portion to grip the tubular to create an anchor between the downhole tool and tubular.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the anchor portion is on an outer surface of the expandable annular member, and the anchor portion includes a gripping surface that is configured to penetrate the tubular upon expansion of the expandable annular member to create an anchor, wherein the radial expansion is caused by the moving of the expandable annular member along the mandrel from the first portion of the mandrel to the second portion of the mandrel.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one anti-extrusion bands is two anti-extrusion bands.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one anti-extrusion bands is a first anti-extrusion band and a second anti-extrusion band, wherein the first anti-extrusion member is embedded on a first side of the seal member and the second anti-extrusion band is embedded on a second side of the seal member.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the anchor created between the downhole tool and the tubular inhibits axial movement of the seal member relative to the tubular.

### Claim 11

A downhole tool for use in a wellbore, the tool comprising:
a first tubular having a tapered outer surface;
an expandable annular member disposed on the first tubular; and
a seal member disposed in a first groove of the expandable annular member, the seal member having a first anti-extrusion band and a second anti-extrusion band, wherein the seal member is configured to be expandable radially outward in the wellbore into contact with a second tubular as the expandable annular member moves along the tapered outer surface of the first tubular, and wherein the first anti-extrusion member is embedded on a first side of the seal member and the second anti-extrusion band is embedded on a second side of the seal member.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The tool of claim 11, the expandable annular member further comprising an anchor portion.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The tool of claim 12, wherein anchor portion is configured to be expandable radially outward into contact with the second tubular as the expandable annular member moves along the tapered outer surface of the first tubular.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The tool of claim 12, wherein the seal is positioned along a first end of the expandable annular member and the anchor portion is positioned along a second end of the expandable annular member.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The tool of claim 11, wherein a gap is defined between a side of the seal member and a side of the first groove.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The tool of claim 15, wherein the gap is configured to close upon expansion of the expandable annular member.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The tool of claim 13, wherein the anchor portion includes a gripping surface that is configured to penetrate the wellbore upon expansion of the expandable annular member.

### Claim 18 (depends on 11)

The tool of claim 11, wherein the first groove is formed on a radially outward surface of the expandable annular member.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The tool of claim 18, wherein a second groove is formed on a radially inward surface of the expandable annular member, wherein a second sealing member is disposed in the second groove.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The tool of claim 19, wherein the second sealing member is configured to seal against the tapered surface.

### Claim 21 (depends on 12)

The tool of claim 12, wherein the anchor portion is configured to anchor the tool to the second tubular when the expandable annular member is in an expanded position.

### Claim 22 (depends on 12)

The tool of claim 12, wherein tool does not include a slip assembly configured to grip second tubular.
