## Abstract

A roof rack system for affixing to a vehicle having a plurality of mounting locations system is provided. The roof rack system comprises a crossbar assembly comprising: an axis of motion, e.g., translational motion; an internal structure; a first section; a second section; a third section; a first end mount; and a second end mount. The first and second sections are configured to translate, in opposite directions, along the axis of motion relative to the internal structure. The internal structure is configured to cause the third section to be centered between the first and second sections as the first and second sections translate. The first and second end mounts are coupled to respective outboard portions of the first and second sections. The first and second end mounts are configured to mount to respective first and second mounting locations, e.g., mounting locations of the vehicle.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A roof rack system for affixing to a vehicle having a plurality of mounting locations, the roof rack system comprising:
a crossbar assembly comprising:
an axis of motion;
an internal structure;
a first section configured to translate along the axis relative to the internal structure,
a second section configured to translate along the axis relative to the internal structure opposite the first section, and
a third section rigidly affixed to the internal structure and arranged between the first section and the second section, wherein the internal structure is configured to cause the third section to be centered between the first section and the second section as the first section and the second section translate;
a first end mount coupled to an outboard portion of the first section and configured to mount to a first mounting location; and
a second end mount coupled to an outboard portion of the section and configured to mount to a second mounting location.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The roof rack system of claim 1, wherein the internal structure comprises:
at least one internal bar configured to provide structure rigidity to the crossbar assembly; and
at least one slide mechanism configured to allow the first section and the second section to translate relative to the at least one internal bar.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The roof rack system of claim 2, wherein the at least one internal bar comprises a hollow interior.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The roof rack system of claim 2, wherein the at least one slide mechanism comprises a pully-cable mechanism.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The roof rack system of claim 4, wherein the pulley-cable mechanism comprises:
a pulley rigidly affixed to the at least one internal bar;
a cable comprising a first cable end and a second cable end, wherein:
the first cable end is affixed to the first section,
the second cable end is affixed to the second section, and
the cable is wrapped around the pulley.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The roof rack system of claim 5, wherein the pulley is rigidly affixed to the at least one internal bar by an axle.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

The roof rack system of claim 4, wherein the first section is positioned on a first side of the third section, and wherein the pulley-cable mechanism comprises:
a first pulley rigidly affixed to the at least one internal bar on the first side of the third section;
a second pulley rigidly affixed to the at least one internal bar on a second side of the third section opposite the first side;
a first cable affixed to the first section and the second section, wherein the first cable is wrapped around the first pulley;
a second cable affixed to the first section and the second section, wherein the second cable is wrapped around the second pulley.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The roof rack system of claim 2, wherein the at least one slide mechanism comprises a rack-and-pinion mechanism, wherein a first rack is coupled to the first section, a second rack is coupled to the second section, and a pinion gear is coupled to the internal structure.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The roof rack system of claim 8, wherein the first section and the second section are configured to move towards and away from the third section to change a distance between the first end mount and the second end mount.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The roof rack system of claim 1, wherein the first section, the second section, and the third section each comprise a similar outer profile.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The roof rack system of claim 10, wherein the outer profile comprises a T-slot.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The roof rack system of claim 10, wherein the outer profile comprises an aerodynamic feature.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The roof rack system of claim 1, wherein the first section, the second section, and the third section are comprised of a metal.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The roof rack system of claim 1, wherein the internal structure is coupled to both the first section and the second section by an intermediate material.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The roof rack system of claim 1, wherein the intermediate material comprises at least one of rubber and plastic.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The roof rack system of claim 1, further comprising a first locking mechanism configured to lock the first section to the internal structure.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The roof rack system of claim 16, further comprising a second locking mechanism configured to lock the second section to the internal structure.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

A method for installing the roof rack system of claim 1 on a vehicle, the method comprising:
affixing the first end mount to a first mounting location of the vehicle;
changing the length of the extendable crossbar by applying a force; and
affixing the second end mount to a second mounting location of the vehicle.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, wherein:
the third section is centered along the axis; and
when the length of the extendable crossbar is changed, the third section remains centered.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The method of claim 19, wherein changing the length of the extendable comprises applying a force to at least one of the first section, the second section, or the third section.
