## Abstract

A mold system and method for forming a casting article for investment casting is disclosed. The mold system includes a mold for receiving therein a selected core chosen from a plurality of varied cores. The mold includes a plurality of separable mold portions that are coupleable together to create the mold and configured to form a sacrificial material from a sacrificial material fluid about the selected core. At least one selected separable mold portion of the plurality of separable mold portions includes a set of varied interchangeable versions of the at least one selected separable mold portion. Each varied interchangeable version of the selected separable mold portion is configured to accommodate a different core of the plurality of varied cores. A number of systems for controlling a temperature of the mold are also disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of forming a casting article for investment casting, the casting article including a core surrounded by a solidified sacrificial material, the method comprising:
additively manufacturing a plurality of separable mold portions for a mold for forming the casting article, the plurality of separable mold portions including a set of varied interchangeable versions of a selected separable mold portion, each varied interchangeable version of the selected separable mold portion configured to accommodate a different core of a plurality of varied cores;
forming the mold about a selected core of the plurality of varied cores by coupling two or more mold-selected separable mold portions together, the mold-selected separable mold portions selected to accommodate the selected core of the plurality of varied cores, wherein the forming further includes positioning the selected core in the mold to form a space between an exterior surface of the selected core and an interior surface of the mold;
casting the casting article by introducing a sacrificial material fluid into the space between the exterior surface of the selected core and the interior surface of the mold and about the exterior surface of the selected core, the sacrificial material fluid comprising a wax or a polymer, the sacrificial material fluid when solidified forming the sacrificial material about the selected core;
coating the casting article with a ceramic material to form a ceramic mold for the investment casting; and
wherein each separable mold portion includes a mold thermal conducting conduit therein configured to conduct a temperature controlled thermal fluid therethrough to control a temperature of at least the respective separable mold portion.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein forming the mold includes fastening the two or more mold-selected separable mold portions together using fasteners.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the additively manufacturing is selected from stereolithography and direct metal laser melting.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein each separable mold portion includes one of: a metal alloy, an acrylic based material, or a material having glass transition temperature above 70° C.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising controlling a temperature of each of the plurality of separable mold portions.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the positioning includes positioning the selected core in the mold using a core positioner receiver in at least one of the plurality of separable mold portions.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the positioning includes using a plurality of core positioners configured to position the selected core via the core positioner receiver in the at least one of the plurality of separable mold portions.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the positioning includes using an adjustable core positioner in each core positioner receiver, each adjustable core positioner configured to position a number of the plurality of varied cores in the mold.
