## Abstract

A method of treating insulin resistance includes administering to a subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising diethyl azelate. For example, a method of treating insulin resistance includes orally administering to a subject a pharmaceutical composition that includes diethyl azelate at a dosage range from about 0.1 mg/kg/day to about 10 mg/kg/day.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of treating Type 2 diabetes comprising administering to a subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising diethyl azelate at a dose in a range from 0.5 mg/kg/day to 2.5 mg/kg/day.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the administering step is performed enterically.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, where enteric administration is oral.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the administering step is performed parenterally.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the parenteral administration is performed intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously, or combinations thereof.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising administering a second active ingredient.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the second active ingredient comprises one or more selected from the group consisting of a C1-C4 alkyl ester azelate different from diethyl azelate, a biguanide, a thiazolidinedione, a corticosteroid, insulin, a lipase inhibitor, a glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist, and combinations thereof.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the biguanide comprises metformin, buformin, phenformin, or combinations thereof.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the thiazolidinedione comprises pioglitazone, rosiglitazone, or combinations thereof.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the corticosteroid comprises prednisone.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the insulin is formulated as a rapid-acting formulation, an intermediate-acting formulation, a long-acting formulation, or combinations thereof.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the lipase inhibitor comprises orlistat.

### Claim 13 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the GLP-1 agonist comprises exenatide, liraglutide, and combinations thereof.
