## Abstract

Genetic and epigenetic diseases and disorders are treated with FDA approved dietary compositions in the form of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals. The diseases and disorders to be treated include Rett syndrome, trinucleotide repeat diseases such as Fragile X syndrome, memory impairment, chronic inflammation, pre-cancerous conditions which involve cancer stem cells, and post-cancerous conditions which involve cancer stem cells which have survived in spite of cancer treatment. Treatment options include prophylactic treatment which is initiated prior to the development of the symptoms of the disease or disorder.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for treating a trinucleotide repeat disorder in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising orally administering to the subject about 375 mg to about 15,000 mg of acetate per day, wherein said acetate is provided as a composition comprising magnesium acetate, calcium acetate, or ethylacetate; wherein administration of the composition increases acetylation of histone H3K9 and/or histone H3K14 in the subject.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of acetate per day is about 1500 mg to about 7500 mg.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of acetate per day is about 750 mg to about 3000 mg.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of acetate per day is about 375 mg to about 2000 mg.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is a nutraceutical.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is a dietary supplement.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein said dietary supplement is in the form of a capsule.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is a pharmaceutical composition.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the trinucleotide repeat disorder is Fragile X or Fragile XE.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the trinucleotide repeat disorder is Fragile X, and the administration of the composition increases expression of FMR1 gene.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said trinucleotide repeat disorder is a polyglutamine disease.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10 wherein said polyglutamine disease is Huntington's disease, Dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy, Spinal and Bulbar Muscle Atrophy, Spinocerebellar ataxia Type 1, Spinocerebellar ataxia Type 2, Spinocerebellar ataxia Type 3, Spinocerebellar ataxia Type 6, Spinocerebellar ataxia Type 7, or Spinocerebellar ataxia Type 17.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein said trinucleotide repeat disorder involves the repeating of a pair of trinucleotides.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13 wherein said trinucleotide disorder is Friedreich ataxia.
