## Abstract

A stentless support structure capable of being at least partly assembled in situ. The support structure comprises a braided tube that is very flexible and, when elongated, becomes very long and very small in diameter, thereby being capable of placement within a small diameter catheter. The support structure is preferably constructed of one or more thin strands of a super-elastic or shape memory material such as Nitinol. When released from the catheter, the support structure folds itself into a longitudinally compact configuration. The support structure thus gains significant strength as the number of folds increase. This radial strength obviates the need for a support stent. The support structure may include attachment points for a prosthetic valve.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A prosthetic heart valve comprising:
a first wire braided to form a tubular support structure having an elongated configuration and a folded configuration, said first wire heat set to be biased toward said folded configuration;
a second wire formed into an annular wire form having a plurality of commissural points;
a material attached to said annular wire form to create valve leaflets that remain open when fluid flows through the leaflets in a first direction and coapt to stop fluid from flowing through them when said fluid flows in a second direction, opposite said first direction.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 wherein said tubular support structure comprises a distal end and a proximal end in said elongated configuration.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The prosthetic heart valve of claim 2 wherein said second wire is attached to the proximal end of said tubular support structure.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The prosthetic support structure of claim 2 wherein said proximal end of said tubular support structure in said elongated configuration is not located at a proximal end of said support structure when said support structure assumes said folded configuration.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 wherein when said tubular support structure achieves said folded configuration, a body having at least two-ply is created.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The prosthetic heart valve of claim 5 further comprising a liner disposed between said at least two plies of said body.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 wherein said material comprises biological tissue.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The prosthetic heart valve of claim 6 wherein said liner comprises synthetic material.

### Claim 9

A method of creating a prosthetic heart valve comprising:
braiding a first wire into a tubular support structure;
creating at least one preformed fold in said tubular support structure such that said support structure has an elongated configuration and is biased toward a folded configuration;
forming a second wire into a wire form having commissural point separated by arcuate sections;
attaching valve material to said wire form to form valve leaflets capable of coapting to allow flow in one direction and prevent flow in a second, opposite direction;
attaching said wire form to an end of said support structure, wherein said end is proximal in said elongated configuration, and is distal of said preformed fold when said support structure is in said folded configuration.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 wherein creating at least one preformed fold comprises heat setting said at least one preformed fold in said tubular support structure.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 wherein creating at least one preformed fold comprises creating two spaced-apart preformed folds.

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 wherein attaching valve material to said wire form comprises attaching biological tissue to said wire form.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 wherein attaching valve material to said wire form comprises suturing valve material to said wire form.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 further comprising attaching a liner to said tubular support structure such that when said tubular support structure is in said folded configuration, said liner is located between a first ply and a second ply of said tubular support structure.
