Claims2
A process for manufacturing nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) ester, the process comprising an acetylation step, wherein the acetylation step consists of reacting, at a temperature between 40 and 110° C., a mixture consisting of NCC, acetic acid, and acetic anhydride, in the presence of sulfuric acid, wherein the amount of the sulfuric acid is between 0.01% and 0.1%, compared to the weight of NCC;
- and wherein the acetic anhydride is present at a ratio of acetic anhydride to NCC of between 0.5-2 to 1;
- to thereby obtain NCC ester in a crystalline form.
