Abstract
Some embodiments provide a system for external manipulation of magnetic nanoparticles in vasculature using a remotely placed magnetic field-generating stator. In one aspect, the systems and methods relate to the control of magnetic nanoparticles in a fluid medium using permanent magnet-based or electromagnetic field-generating stator sources. Such a system can be useful for increasing the diffusion of therapeutic agents in a fluid medium, such as a human circulatory system, which can result in substantial clearance of fluid obstructions, such as vascular occlusions, in a circulatory system resulting in increased blood flow.
Claims16
A method of treating a clot within vasculature of a patient, the method comprising:
- attaching tissue plasminogen activator to a plurality of nanoparticles,
- wherein the nanoparticles comprise superparamagnetic nanoparticles, and
- wherein the superparamagnetic nanoparticles comprise a polymeric coating;
- administering the superparamagnetic nanoparticles within the vasculature of the patient;
- applying a magnetic field to the superparamagnetic nanoparticles sufficient to cause the superparamagnetic nanoparticles to travel to a location of the clot,
- wherein applying the magnetic field to the superparamagnetic nanoparticles comprises rotating one or more permanent magnets positioned external to the patient, and
- wherein the tissue plasminogen activator attached to the plurality of superparamagnetic nanoparticles is configured to lyse the clot.
A method of treating an obstruction or occlusion within vasculature of a patient, the method comprising:
- attaching a thrombolytic drug to a plurality of nanoparticles,
- wherein the nanoparticles comprise superparamagnetic nanoparticles, and
- wherein the superparamagnetic nanoparticles comprise a polymeric coating;
- administering the superparamagnetic nanoparticles within the vasculature of the patient;
- applying a magnetic field to the superparamagnetic nanoparticles sufficient to cause the superparamagnetic nanoparticles to travel to a location of the obstruction or occlusion,
- wherein applying the magnetic field to the superparamagnetic nanoparticles comprises rotating one or more permanent magnets positioned external to the patient, and
- wherein the thrombolytic drug attached to the plurality of superparamagnetic nanoparticles is configured to lyse the obstruction or occlusion.
A method of confirming lysis of an obstruction or occlusion within vasculature, the method comprising:
- administering magnetic nanoparticles within vasculature of a subject,
- causing the magnetic nanoparticles to travel to a location at which treatment of an obstruction or occlusion within a vessel of the vasculature has been performed by applying a magnetic field using one or more magnets;
- manipulating the magnetic field to cause the magnetic nanoparticles to create flow patterns in blood within the vessel at the location;
- and
- performing Doppler imaging at the location to visualize the flow patterns created by the magnetic nanoparticles, thereby confirming that the obstruction or occlusion has been lysed sufficiently to restore blood flow within the vessel.
