Abstract
The present invention relates to an alkane-sulfonation process using alkane and sulfur trioxide, especially pure sulfur trioxide (100%) under solvent-free conditions in the presence of an initiator. It further relates to the use of a precursor which forms “in-situ” an initiator for manufacturing of alkanesulfonic acids, especially methanesulfonic acids.
Claims9
A method of preparing methanesulfonic acid, comprising:
- mixing a compound of the formula (I)
- ALK-SO2—O—O—X (I),
- wherein ALK is a methyl group, ethyl and X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, zinc, aluminum, an alkali metal and an alkaline earth metal, with a first mixture comprising methane, and sulfur trioxide, to form a second mixture comprising the methanesulfonic acid.
