Abstract
A wildlife exclusion system for railway tracks is provided which includes an exclusion arrangement positioned to span across the railway tracks at a location along a length of the railway tracks. The exclusion arrangement extends generally perpendicular to the railway tracks and has a series of conductive elements spaced apart from each other to form an exclusion are configured to provide an electric shock to wild animals when particular conductive elements within the exclusion area are bridged thereby. Methods of installing a wildlife exclusion system and methods of discouraging wild animals from traveling along railway tracks are also provided.
Claims18
A wildlife exclusion system, the wildlife exclusion system comprising:
- a first exclusion arrangement including a series of at least four conductive elements supported in a stationary manner and spaced apart from each other with insulating material between the conductive elements to form a first exclusion area having at least two distinct sets of conductive elements that are electrically insulated from each other by the insulating material and form a first open circuit, and being configured to provide an electric shock to wild animals when particular conductive elements from the at least two distinct sets of conductive elements within the first exclusion area are bridged thereby to close the first open circuit;
- and
- a second exclusion arrangement including a series of at least four conductive elements supported in a stationary manner and spaced apart from each other with insulating material between the conductive elements to form a second exclusion area having at least two distinct sets of conductive elements that are electrically insulated from each other by the insulating material and form a second open circuit, and being configured to provide an electric shock to wild animals when particular conductive elements from the at least two distinct sets of conductive elements within the second exclusion area are bridged thereby to close the second open circuit,
- wherein the first exclusion arrangement is arranged relative to the second exclusion arrangement to define a corridor between the first and second exclusion arrangements for the passage of animal wildlife, and
- wherein a respective arrangement of conductive material in the form of a metal mesh is installed in ground adjacent to each of the first and second exclusion arrangements to increase the conductivity of the ground immediately adjacent to the first and second exclusion arrangements for contact by animal wildlife on the ground of increased conductivity.
