Adjustable per-symbol entropy coding probability updating for image and video coding

An apparatus comprising:

• a processor configured to:
• generate decoded image data by decoding encoded image data using adjustable per-symbol entropy coding probability updating, wherein decoding the encoded image data using adjustable per-symbol entropy coding probability updating includes:
• obtaining a value of a probability update indicator for a portion of the decoded image data, the value of the probability update indicator for the portion indicating whether per-symbol entropy coding probability updating is disabled for the portion;
• and
• generating decoded image data for the portion in accordance with the value of the probability update indicator for the portion;
• and
• output the decoded image data.

An apparatus comprising:

• a processor configured to:
• generate encoded image data by encoding input image data using adjustable per-symbol entropy coding probability updating, wherein encoding the input image data using adjustable per-symbol entropy coding probability updating includes:
• including a value of a probability update indicator for a portion of the encoded image data in an output bitstream, the value of the probability update indicator for the portion indicating whether per-symbol entropy coding probability updating is disabled for the portion;
• generating entropy coded image data for the portion in accordance with the value of the probability update indicator for the portion;
• and
• including the entropy coded image data in the output bitstream;
• and output the output bitstream.
