Abstract
Systems and methods for encoding a video stream at multiple bit rates is disclosed herein. An encoder divides each frame of a video stream into a plurality of portions and allocates an available number of bits between the plurality of portions based on user preference information. Portions having one or more objects of interest to the viewer determined based on the user preference information are allocated a higher number of available bits while portions of the frames that do not include one or more objects of interest are allocated a minimum number of bits from the available bits.
Claims20
A method of content encoding comprising:
- receiving, by a server, a request for a media asset;
- retrieving, by the server, user preference information for a user requesting the content;
- accessing, by the server, an input video stream associated with the media asset and
- generating, by the server, an encoded version of the media asset, wherein generating the encoded version of the media asset comprises:
- identifying, by the server, a key portion of the frame in the input video stream based on the retrieved user profile information;
- and
- generating an encoded version of the frame, wherein generating the encoded version of the frame comprises:
- encoding, by the server, the key portion of the frame at a first quality level that is higher than a second quality level at which a portion of the frame other than the key portion of the frame is encoded;
- wherein encoding the key portion of the frame at the first quality level comprises allocating, by the server, a higher number of bits to the key portion of the frame, and wherein encoding the portion other than the key portion at the second quality level comprises allocating, by the server, a lower number of bits to the portion other than the key portion of the frame;
- and
- generating the encoded version of the frame to include:
- (a) the encoded key portion of the frame of the input video stream;
- and (b) the encoded portion of the frame of the input video stream other than the key portion;
- and
- transmitting via a network, by the server, the encoded version of the frame to a display device associated with the user requesting the media asset for display.
A system of content encoding, the system comprising:
- control circuitry configured to:
- receive a request for a media asset;
- retrieve user preference information for a user requesting the content;
- access an input video stream associated with the media asset;
- and
- generate an encoded version of the media asset, wherein generating the encoded version of the media asset comprises:
- identify a key portion of the frame in the input video stream based on the retrieved user profile information;
- and
- generate an encoded version of the frame, wherein generating the encoded version of the frame comprises:
- encode the key portion of the frame at a first quality level that is higher than a second quality level at which a portion of the frame other than the key portion of the frame is encoded;
- and
- wherein encoding the key portion of the frame at the first quality level comprises allocating a higher number of bits to the key portion of the frame, and wherein encoding the portion other than the key portion at the second quality level comprises allocating a lower number of bits to the portion other than the key portion of the frame;
- and
- generate the encoded version of the frame to include:
- (a) the encoded key portion of the frame of the input video stream;
- and (b) the encoded portion of the frame of the input video stream other than the key portion;
- and
- transmit, via a network, the encoded version of the frame to a display device associated with the user requesting the media asset for display.
