Abstract
Disclosed herein is a new type of fully-connected, hybrid beamforming transceiver architecture. The transceiver described herein is bi-directional and can be configured as a transmit beamformer or a receive beamformer. A method and apparatus are described that allows the beamformer to operate in “carrier aggregated” mode, where communication channels in multiple disparate frequency bands can be simultaneously accessed.

A fully-connected hybrid beamforming transmitter comprising:
- circuitry implementing a complex quadrature mixer for upconverting a plurality of baseband data streams;
- circuitry implementing a splitter for splitting outputs of the complex quadrature mixer into a number of identical upconverted data streams, the number of identical upconverted data streams corresponding to a number of transmitting antennas;
- circuitry for applying complex weighting to each of the identical upconverted data streams;
- and
- circuitry implementing two or more power amplifiers, each of the two or more power amplifiers taking as input two or more combined weighted, upconverted data streams, each of the two or more power amplifiers coupled to an antenna.
A fully-connected hybrid beamforming transmitter comprising:
- circuitry implementing a complex quadrature mixer for upconverting a plurality of baseband data streams;
- circuitry implementing a splitter for splitting outputs of the complex quadrature mixer into a number of identical upconverted data streams, the number of identical upconverted data streams corresponding to a number of transmitting antennas;
- circuitry for applying a per-stream and a per-antenna complex weighting to each of the identical upconverted data streams;
- and
- circuitry implementing two or more power amplifiers, each of the two or more power amplifiers taking as input a combination of all weighted, upconverted data streams, each of the two or more power amplifiers coupled to an antenna.
A fully-connected hybrid beamforming transceiver comprising:
- circuitry implementing a bidirectional complex quadrature mixer for upconverting a plurality of baseband data streams and for downconverting a plurality of upconverted data streams;
- circuitry implementing a bidirectional combination splitter/combiner for splitting the upconverted data streams into a number of identical upconverted data streams corresponding to a number of transmitting antennas and for combining a plurality of received upconverted data streams to a single upconverted data stream;
- circuitry for applying bidirectional complex weighting to each upconverted data stream and each received upconverted data stream;
- and
- circuitry implementing two or more bidirectional power amplifiers, each of the two of more bidirectional power amplifiers taking as input two or more combined, weighted upconverted data streams, each of the two or more bidirectional power amplifiers coupled to an antenna.
A method of calibration of a heterodyne receiver having first and second complex quadrature stages comprising:
- applying a sinusoidal test signal to an input of the first complex quadrature stage;
- receiving a first stage quadrature error signal at an output of the first complex quadrature stage;
- applying a low pass filter to the first stage quadrature error signal;
- digitizing the first stage quadrature error signal;
- inserting a first stage quadrature error correction signal through one or more first stage local oscillator buffers;
- receiving a second stage quadrature error signal at an output of the second complex quadrature stage;
- digitizing the second stage quadrature error signal;
- and
- inserting a second stage quadrature error correction signal through one or more second stage local oscillator buffers.
A method of performing self-cancellation of interference in a fully-connected, hybrid beamforming transceiver wherein one stream in a receive array at a receiver portion of the fully-connected, hybrid beamforming transceiver transmits a copy of a transmitted signal, comprising:
- providing a per-element self-interference canceller at each path of the receiver portion of the fully-connected, hybrid beamforming transceiver;
- feeding the copy of the transmitted signal into each of the self-interference cancellers at the receiver portion;
- and
- providing a complex weighting of the transmitted signal in each element of the receiver portion to cancel incoming transmit signal leakage.
