A method for supplying power from a transformerless static synchronous compensator to an electrical load when an interruption in power occurs, the method comprising:
- supplying a first direct current (DC) voltage from a low voltage energy storage device to a two-stage bi-directional DC-DC converter;
- converting, by the two-stage bi-directional DC-DC converter, the first DC voltage from the low voltage energy storage device into a second DC voltage;
- generating, by a multi-level inverter, an alternating current (AC) inverter voltage from the second DC voltage, wherein the AC inverter voltage is a medium voltage less than the second DC voltage;
- providing the AC inverter voltage to a point of common coupling (PCC);
- and
- controlling the AC inverter voltage of the multi-level inverter to generate or absorb reactive power to achieve a power factor at the PCC equal to or approximately equal to unity,
- wherein when the energy storage device is discharged, the stages of the two-stage DC-DC converter operate to step up a voltage in two steps, and when the energy storage device is charged, the stages of the two-stage DC-DC converter operate to step down the voltage in two steps.
