Abstract
The invention provides a friction material and a method of making the friction material. The friction material comprises man-made vitreous fibres whose chemical composition comprises: less than 2 wt % Fe2O3; 30-40 wt % MgO+CaO; 35-45 wt % SiO2; 17-24 wt % Al2O3; and 1-5 wt % K2O+Na2O.

A friction material comprising man-made vitreous fibres (MMVF) dispersed in a matrix, the MMVF comprising:
- less than 2 wt % Fe2O3
- 30-40 wt % MgO+CaO
- 35-45 wt % SiO2
- 17-24 wt % Al2O3
- 1-5 wt % K2O+Na2O,
- wherein the MMVF have a number mean diameter of from 3 to 5 μm,
- wherein the MMVF are present in an amount of from 3 to 15 vol %.
