Abstract
Components for articles of footwear and athletic equipment are provided including a foam. A variety of foams and foam components and compositions for forming the foams are provided. In some aspects, the foams and components including the foams can have exceptionally high energy return while also having improved durability and softness. In particular, midsoles including the foams are provided for use in an article of footwear. Methods of making the compositions and foams are provided, as well as methods of making an article of footwear including one of the foam components. In some aspects, the foams and foam components can be made by injection molding or injection molding followed by compression molding.
Claims26
A foam comprising:
- a foamed and crosslinked reaction product of a composition comprising:
- a block copolymer comprising
- a first block and a third block, each independently comprising a linear or branched chain aliphatic polymer having a plurality of aromatic groups attached pendantly thereto,
- a second block located between the first block and the third block and comprising an aliphatic polymer having a plurality of aliphatic side chains attached thereto, and
- a plurality of first ethylenically unsaturated groups present on one or more of the first block, second block, and third block;
- wherein the block copolymer comprises about 60 percent to about 90 percent of the second blocks by weight based upon the weight of the block copolymer;
- an olefinic copolymer comprising a plurality of first olefinic segments and a plurality of second olefinic segments having a different chemical structure from the first olefinic segments;
- one or more linking polymers, each linking polymer comprising one or more third olefinic segments;
- and
- about 20 parts by weight to about 45 parts by weight of an ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer based upon a total weight of the foam, wherein the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer comprises a first ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a first vinyl acetate content and a second ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a second vinyl acetate content, wherein the first vinyl acetate content is different from the second vinyl acetate content;
- wherein a ratio VI of a total parts by weight of the one or more EVA copolymer to a total parts by weight of the one or more linking polymers is from about 1.00 to about 2.00;
- wherein the foam has a split tear of from about 2.5 kg/cm to 3.5 kg/cm;
- a hardness of from 40 Asker C to 70 Asker C when the foam is compressed;
- and
- a compression set of about 20 percent to about 35 percent.
