Abstract
A process for treating mine impacted water containing one or more reduced selenium species by an advanced oxidation process (AOP) including ozone and ultraviolet light, or ozone and hydrogen peroxide is disclosed. The process oxidizes the one or more reduced selenium species to selenate and thereby produces AOP treated water. Residual oxidants are removed from the AOP treated water.
Claims20
A process comprising:
- treating mine impacted water (MIW) containing one or more reduced selenium species by subjecting the MIW to an advanced oxidation process (AOP) including ozone at a transferred ozone dose of from 3 mg/L to 25 mg/L and hydrogen peroxide at a dose of from 1 mg/L to 25 mg/L, for a contact time of from 1 min to 10 min, oxidizing the one or more reduced selenium species to selenate and thereby producing an AOP treated water having at least 90% of the total dissolved selenium present in the AOP treated water present as selenate, followed by removing residual oxidants from the AOP treated water.
