## Abstract

A method of treating a subject having cancer is described that includes administering a therapeutically effective amount of a β-(1,3)-(1,4) glucan to the subject. Methods of immunostimulating in a subject by administering an effective amount of a β-(1,3)-(1,4) glucan to the subject are also described.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of treating a subject having cancer, consisting of administering a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition consisting of β-(1-3)-(1-4) glucan, a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, and optionally one or more additives to the subject, wherein the method may further optionally include an additional cancer treatment method selected from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and adoptive immunotherapy, wherein the β-(1-3)-(1-4) glucan has a molecular weight from 100 to 300 kDa.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the cancer is metastatic cancer.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the cancer is melanoma or osteosarcoma.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the β-(1-3)-(1-4) glucan is oat-derived.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the β-(1,3)-(1,4) glucan has a molecular weight from 150 to 250 kDa.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the β-(1,3)-(1,4) glucan has a molecular weight from 190 to 210 kDa.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the β-(1,3)-(1,4) glucan has a linear chain structure.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the subject is human.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the subject is a companion animal.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the cancer has developed immune tolerance.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the cancer is further treated with adoptive immunotherapy using T-lymphocytes.

### Claim 12

A method of immunostimulation in a subject, consisting of administering an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition consisting of β-(1-3)-(1-4) glucan, a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, and optionally one or more additives to the subject, wherein the β-(1-3)-(1-4) glucan has a molecular weight from 100 to 300 kDa.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the subject has cancer.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the cancer has developed immune tolerance.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the β-(1,3)-(1,4) glucan has a molecular weight from 190 to 210 kDa.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the immunostimulation includes macrophage activation.

### Claim 17 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the immunostimulation includes T-cell activation.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the β-(1,3)-(1,4) glucan is administered via a parenteral or topical route.
