## Abstract

Disclosed is a dental appliance composed of a thermo-plastic polymer with low compressibility, high toughness, and high tensile strength, with a low softening point. The appliance has perforations that enable it to be easily custom-fitted by the user or a health professional. The appliance begins as a generally U-shaped, unformed dental tray that is significantly thinner than existing dental appliances. Once fitted, the dental appliance provides superior protection against damage to the enamel of the teeth and abrasion of the teeth due to bruxism or other mechanism leading to biomechanical wear of dental surfaces. The perforations facilitate the custom-fitting process by allowing the user to suck air through the perforations, thus applying a negative pressure between the material and the teeth while the material is still soft and pliable. This enables a user or health professional to within minutes create a final product that rivals the quality and fit of an appliance made by dental laboratories using dentist made impressions.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for dissipating shear forces in a mouth guard, comprising:
providing a mouth guard with a U-shaped cross-section formed by an inner upstanding wall with an inner surface and an outer surface and an outer upstanding wall with an inner surface and an outer surface, said inner upstanding wall and said outer upstanding wall being connected by a U-shaped occlusal line portion;
providing at least one cusp on an upper edge portion of said outer upstanding wall and forming at least one lobe on said upper edge portion of said outer upstanding wall;
providing a first plurality of perforations extending entirely through said inner upstanding wall, said first plurality of perforations having a first row and a second row, wherein perforations in said first and second rows are laterally offset;
providing a second plurality of perforations extending entirely through said outer upstanding wall, said second plurality of perforations having a first row and a second row, wherein perforations in said first and second rows are laterally offset,
wherein said first and second rows of said first plurality of perforations are spaced from said first and second rows of said second plurality of perforations,
wherein individual perforations of said first and second plurality of perforations extend spaced from one another continuously from a rear portion on a first side of said mouth guard, across a line of symmetry, to a rear portion on a second side of said mouth guard,
wherein said first and second plurality of perforations are arranged symmetrically about the line of symmetry,
wherein said mouth guard is constructed of randomly distributed, randomly oriented interwoven strands of polycaprolactone molecules of random shapes and sizes to increase abrasion resistance of said mouth guard,
wherein said U-shaped occlusal line portion is solid with no perforations, so that said first and second rows of perforations in said first and second plurality of perforations are the only perforations in said mouth guard;
subjecting said occlusal line portion to shearing forces by grinding the teeth;
transferring through said interwoven strands of polymer said shearing forces during the grinding from said occlusal line portion to said first and second pluralities of perforations in a lateral direction to dissipate the shearing forces, as well as upwardly from said occlusal line portion to said at least one cusp for dissipation therein.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said laterally moving shearing force in said walls contacts a first perforation causing it to deform, said deformation causing a perforation to compress immediately adjacent said first perforation.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the amount of compression of said adjacent perforation is proportional to the amount of the deformation of the first perforation.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said shearing force transfers upwardly by a deformation wave traveling through said outer upstanding wall and crests at the cusp where it is dissipated.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said shearing forces are dissipated through said lateral distortion of said perforations.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein portions of said perforations are initially circular but distort to ovals when subjected to shearing forces.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said first and second rows of said first plurality of perforations are arranged in two parallel rows adjacent said upper edge portion.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said perforations in one portion of said mouth guard are insulated from shearing forces in a remote portion of said mouth guard by said perforations in between said one portion and said remote portion.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said perforations have a teardrop shape, said teardrop shapes being located adjacent circular perforations, said teardrop shapes deforming more under shearing forces than said circular perforations.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said perforations have a half moon shape, said half moon shapes being located adjacent circular perforations, said half moon shapes deforming more under shearing forces than said circular perforations.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said shearing forces do not compress said walls.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said perforations are spaced from one another by a distance of a perforation diameter away from an adjacent perforation.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein adjacent perforations have different shapes.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said mouth guard is formed of a substantially incompressible, constant volume material.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising locating individual perforations in said first row of perforations in said first plurality of perforations a different radial distance from said at least one cusp compared to said at least one lobe.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising locating individual perforations in said second row of perforations in said second plurality of perforations a different radial distance from an inner perimeter.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of said perforations have the same circular cross-sectional shape.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein there are a greater number of perforations in said first plurality of perforations compared with said second plurality of perforations.
