Abstract
A method and system for electrodeposition of high-sp3 diamond/DLC by significantly increasing the sp3 carbon content of electrodeposited net-shape diamond, and use of same for manufacture of particulate and nanocrystalline diamond and composites.
Claims12
A method for electrodepositing diamondlike carbon comprising the steps of:
- cathodically electrodepositing diamondlike carbon on an electrodeposition substrate from a carbon source electrolyte to form an sp3 and sp2 carbon containing diamondlike carbon cathodic DLC electrodeposit layer,
- anodically preferentially removing sp2 carbon from said cathodic DLC electrodeposit layer to form an sp3 carbon enhanced DLC layer with decreased sp2 carbon content and an enhanced proportion of sp3 carbon content to sp2 carbon content compared to said cathodic DLC layer prior to said preferential sp2 carbon removal, and
- cathodically electrodepositing diamondlike carbon on said sp3-carbon enhanced DLC layer to form a contiguous, monolithic diamondlike carbon electrodeposit layer.
