Abstract
The present invention relates to a water filter cartridge, with a housing and a flow path for air for ventilating a water tank storing water to be processed by the water filter cartridge. The latter is distinguished in that shut-off means are provided for the flow path for air, preferably in the form of a valve or a membrane.
Claims22
In a water filter cartridge (1), with a housing (2) and a flow path (3) for air (4) for ventilating a water-storing water tank which feeds the water filter cartridge said water filter cartridge having a top end and a bottom end and a water treatment chamber in the water filter cartridge containing a filter medium wherein the improvement comprises an air flow path tube separating the flow path for air inside the air flow path tube from the filter medium outside the air path flow tube and a filter chamber disposed around the outside of the air flow path tube and a counter current water and air separation chamber with a top end communicating directly with a bottom end of the air flow path tube said counter current water and air separation chamber having a bottom end communicating directly with a top end of a combined treated water outlet and air inlet disposed at the bottom end of the water filter cartridge to simultaneously admit air and discharge treated water from the bottom end of the water filter cartridge while venting air to the counter current water and air separation chamber with the air eventually being vented from the top end of the water filter cartridge via the air flow path tube and a shut off means to the flow path for air disposed at or near the a top end of the air flow path tube and with a discharge of water treated by the water filter cartridge and a an axially projecting water directing element or ribs disposed from an inside surface of the air flow path tube to direct water to the counter current water and air separation chamber.
A filter device comprising:
- (a) a water filter housing having a water inlet, an air outlet and a counter current water and air separation chamber;
- (b) a water treatment chamber containing a filter medium connected at one end to the water inlet and having at the other end a treated water outlet;
- (c) an air filled air flow tube to separate the filter medium from the air outlet and a flow path for air and having the air outlet at the a top end of the air filled air flow tube and having a bottom end of the air filled air flow tube connected to a top end of the counter current water and air separation chamber which is also connected to the treated water outlet in the water treatment chamber;
- (d) a combined treated water outlet and air inlet disposed in a bottom end of the water filter housing to simultaneously admit air and discharge treated water from the treated water outlet of the water treatment chamber and vent air through the air filled air flow tube and out the air outlet in the top end of the air filled air flow tube and wherein the combined treated water outlet and air inlet is disposed at the bottom end of the water filter housing and has a top end connected directly to a bottom end of the counter current water and air separation chamber;
- and
- (e) an air shut off valve that is open during filtration with a sealing element and having one end disposed in or on the air filled air flow tube and the other end connected to a top of the air outlet to allow a flow path for air out the shut off valve;
- and
- (f) a tappet disposed within the air filled air flow tube.
A water filter apparatus comprising:
- (a) a water filter housing having a water inlet, an air outlet and an air flow path tube;
- (b) a water treatment chamber containing a water treatment medium disposed radially around the air flow path tube and connected at one end to the water inlet and having at the other end a treated water outlet;
- (c) a countercurrent water and air ventilation chamber having the a top end of the countercurrent water and air ventilation chamber connected to the a bottom end of the air flow path tube and to the treated water outlet said countercurrent water and air ventilation chamber having the a bottom end connected to the a combined treated water outlet and air inlet that is designed to simultaneously admit air and dispense treated water;
- (d) a mechanical shut off device with an elastic sealing element to allow a flow path for air;
- (e) a tappet disposed within the air flow path tube having one end connected to the mechanical shut off device and the other end disposed in the countercurrent water and air ventilation chamber;
- and
- (f) a water barrier with an aft collecting chamber with an air trap to hold air bubbles from the air flow path tube until the air bubbles reach a predetermined size in the water barrier.
