Abstract
Systems, apparatus, and methods related to wound closure devices comprising one or more microstructures are described herein. In some embodiments, the wound closure devices include a backing and a microstructure array. The microstructure array may include a first portion, a second portion, and a bridge portion. The first portion and the second portion each include one or more microstructures configured to penetrate tissue. Additionally, the first portion and the second portion each include one or more expandable portions such that the wound closure device is configured to expand in length. The wound closure device is configured to grip tissue surrounding a wound to either close the wound or secure the tissue in place.
Claims23
A wound closure device for closing a wound in a tissue comprising:
- a microstructure array, the array comprising first and second microstructure array portions fixedly connected at opposite ends of at least one bridge portion that extends in a longitudinal direction extending between the first and second microstructure array portions, wherein the longitudinal direction extends through the first and second microstructure array portions, the first and second microstructure array portions comprising first and second microstructures, respectively, for securing the array to the tissue, and the first and second microstructure array portions at least partially defining first and second structures with spring characteristics, respectively, that lie in-plane with the at least one bridge portion such that the first and second structures with spring characteristics are individually expandable, the at least one bridge portion defining at least one longitudinally extending straight portion without spring characteristics, wherein the at least one bridge portion is longer in the longitudinal direction between the first and second microstructure array portions than in a transverse direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, wherein each microstructure comprised on the microstructure array is angled relative to the microstructure array, and wherein each angled microstructure is angled toward the at least one bridge portion.
A wound closure device for closing a wound in a tissue comprising:
- a first microstructure array portion comprising:
- a first arm portion, a second arm portion, and a first curved portion connecting the first arm portion and the second arm portion to define a first structure with spring characteristics;
- and
- a first microstructure extending from the first arm portion;
- a second microstructure array portion comprising:
- a third arm portion, a fourth arm portion, and a second curved portion connecting the third arm portion and the fourth arm portion to define a second structure with spring characteristics;
- and
- a second microstructure extending from the third arm portion;
- a first longitudinally extending bridge member connecting the first microstructure portion and the second microstructure portion, the first longitudinally extending bridge member comprising a straight portion that defines a first structure without spring characteristics;
- and
- a backing extending across the first microstructure array portion, the second microstructure array portion and the first longitudinally extending bridge member;
- wherein the wound closure device extends along a longitudinal axis;
- the first longitudinally extending bridge member extends over a first length in a direction of the longitudinal axis between the first microstructure array portion and the second microstructure array portion, the first longitudinally extending bridge member having a width perpendicular to the longitudinal axis that is shorter than the first length;
- the first and second microstructure array portions each extend over a second length in the direction of the longitudinal axis from the at least one bridge structure outward, respectively;
- and
- the first length is greater than the second length.
A wound closure device comprising:
- a first stretchable microstructure portion comprising a first microstructure;
- a second stretchable microstructure portion comprising a second microstructure;
- and
- a non-stretchable bridge connecting the first and second stretchable microstructure;
- wherein the first stretchable microstructure portion, the first microstructure, the second stretchable microstructure portion, the second microstructure and the non-stretchable bridge comprise a single monolithic structure;
- wherein the first microstructure and the second microstructure align along a longitudinal axis of the wound closure device that extends along the non-stretchable bridge;
- wherein the first microstructure and the second microstructure are cantilevered from the first stretchable microstructure portion and the second stretchable microstructure portion, respectively;
- and
- wherein the non-stretchable bridge is longer in a longitudinal direction between the first and second stretchable microstructure portions than in a transverse direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction.
