Abstract
The present invention relates to a powdered composition obtained from saffron stigmas characterized in that it comprises from 0.03% to 1% dry weight of safranal; and at least 3.48% dry weight of crocins that encompasses the various trans-crocin-4 (major isomer), trans-crocin-3, trans-crocin-2′, cis-crocin-4, trans-crocin-2, trans-crocin-1 isomers and any of their mixtures.

A method for treatment of low mood, comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising an extract of saffron stigmas analyzed by HPLC, the composition comprising:
- a) between 0.03% and 1% dry weight of safranal, and
- b) at least 3.48% dry weight of crocins, wherein said crocins comprise trans-crocin-4, trans-crocin-3, trans-crocin-2′, cis-crocin-4, trans-crocin-2, and/or trans-crocin-1.
